We are a family run business established in 1980 under a plastic ‘bubble’ in Bagatelle Road. From these humble beginnings, our popularity grew and the School later transferred to a roomier pool at the Bon Air Hotel. A few years later, we had outgrown our surroundings again and a final move took place to Le Mourier in St John. We stayed busy until 2001, when the founder, Mrs. Maureen Parris retired for a couple of years.
When the present location in St Lawrence became vacant, Malcolm, her son, joined Maureen, and the school relaunched in brand new facilities. Now, with help from the rest of the family, we teach all ages from four months old to eighty years young, either individually or in small groups. Our facilities offer a quiet and private atmosphere, with an emphasis on relaxed and enjoyable learning. This is ideal for the nervous or inexperienced adult swimmer and for an effective learning atmosphere for children. Our courses run for 11 weeks on a term basis (mirroring the school term as closely as possible, including a break at half term).
Le Mourier’s teaching activities aren’t limited to the swimming pool. We also run a busy Royal Yachting Association Training Centre, and Le Mourier is the only place in Jersey currently accredited to teach the RYA’s entire powerboat scheme- from Level 1 all the way up to the Advanced Powerboat Day/Night Course. In addition to teaching powerboating at our RYA Centre, Le Mourier has two incredible RIBS- both fully licensed and commercially coded. These ultra-modern, fast and comfortable craft offer the chance for a range of exciting trips around Jersey, France and the neighbouring Channel Islands. What makes Le Mourier different is that we run private trips- you book the boat and we provide skipper and crew. Your trips will be for yourself, your family and your friends- no strangers to share the boat with. We will run at your schedule, and the itinerary will be your own.
School holidays provide an opportunity to take part in one of our incredible holiday Aquatics camps. We have named them Guppy Camps for younger children and Marlin Camps for older ones. These run over five consecutive
days and can be on a half or full day basis. The range of activities the children enjoy- from intensive swimming coaching, RIB expeditions, sea-scooter, kayaking and stand up paddleboarding to the Climbing Wall is truly remarkable. It is no surprise children are desperate to return again and again. For further information on these camps, please have a look here.
As our swimmers progress, they have a chance to move to different and more challenging swimming programs at our various venues, such as Les Roches, Langford and Haute Vallee. This variety of pool offers greater depth and variety of teaching. We also offer a ‘Rookie Club’ for the more capable swimmers that introduces lifesaving skills, first aid and resuscitation giving a greater appreciation of the safety hazards of water and life skills which may help them or others in the future.
Once our swimmers progress through the pools to fully-fledged Gold Hat swimmers, they may then start in our Dolphins program. The older members of the school can also go on to teach should they wish to. At 13 years of age they may take the Student Teacher Certificate. This allows them to attain skill and knowledge to become a qualified vocational teacher after working alongside a fully qualified teacher.
Le Mourier also provide one of Jersey’s best child Party venues in the Island which can all be booked online through our website or via the office.
Recently the school has been inspected by the National Federation of Swimming Schools. This awarding body examines all aspects
of private swimming school business as well as those of public pools. Following strict guidelines they check and evaluate all business and teaching procedures to make sure they meet current and future national guidelines. Le Mourier Swim School and its staff achieved this with Distinction.
